Quarter of coverage in 2027: $1,970

The wage base decides how much of your pay is taxed. This much smaller threshold decides whether you qualify for anything at all.

In 2027, $1,970 of covered earnings earns one quarter of coverage, up from $1,890 in 2026. Four credits take $7,880, and 40 credits — about ten years of work — establish retirement eligibility.

A credit is a threshold, not a fraction

SSA does not prorate credits. In 2027, any quarter in which you earn $1,970 in covered work adds one credit, and the four credits available for the year cap out at $7,880 of earnings. A worker who earns $15,000 and a worker who earns $300,000 both receive exactly four credits.

The mechanic is deliberately coarse. Credits are recorded quarterly on the earnings record, but the dollar test is annual in effect: the first $7,880 of the year fills the year’s four slots regardless of when in the year it is earned.

2026 and 2027 thresholds

Item 2026 2027
Earnings per credit $1,890 $1,970
Earnings for four credits $7,560 $7,880
Retirement credits required 40 40
Medicare credits required 40 40

What the 40 credits buy

Forty credits establish fully insured status, which is the gate for retirement benefits, for most survivor benefits, and for premium-free Medicare Part A. The last one surprises people: Medicare eligibility for hospital coverage is not automatic at 65, it depends on the same work record, your own or a spouse’s.

Disability is different. SSDI requires recent work as well as total credits, and the recent-work requirement scales with age at onset. Under 24, six credits in the three years before onset suffice. Between 24 and 30, you need credits for half the years from 21 to onset, with a minimum of six. At 31 or older, 20 credits must fall in the ten years ending with the quarter of onset. A worker with 40 lifetime credits who stopped working five years ago can therefore fail the disability test while remaining fully insured for retirement.

Why the threshold rises every year

The credit amount is indexed to the national average wage index, exactly like the wage base, but it moves in much smaller steps. In 2027 it reaches $1,970 while the wage base reaches $192,300 — the two figures answer different questions. One asks how much of your pay is taxable; the other asks whether you have worked enough to qualify.

For low and irregular earners, the credit threshold is the number that matters. Ten years of part-time work at $7,880 a year is enough for a retirement benefit, however small. Some benefit is generally worth claiming: it carries Medicare eligibility with it and is subject to the annual COLA.

The record itself is worth auditing. Credits rest on earnings that employers report, and an identifier error can leave a year of work missing entirely. SSA’s earnings statement lists posted credits by year, and corrections are possible with a W-2 or a filed return. A missing block of years affects insured status, not merely the benefit amount.

Self-employment income counts net of expenses. A business with $7,880 of net profit in 2027 earns four credits even if gross receipts reached $200,000; a business with a loss earns none for that year. Credits also cannot be bought or backfilled voluntarily — only reported covered earnings count, which is why a late-filed return that reports the income can still repair the record.

Questions

How much do I need to earn for a Social Security credit in 2027?

$1,970 in covered wages or net self-employment income for each credit, with a maximum of four credits per calendar year.

Can I earn more than four credits in a year?

No. Earnings above $7,880 in 2027 do not generate a fifth credit, and unused credits cannot be carried into another year.

How many credits do I need for Social Security retirement?

40 credits, which is roughly ten years of steady work. Survivor benefits also generally require 40 credits for a widow or widower at full retirement age.

Do the credits need to be consecutive?

No. They accumulate over a lifetime, and the 40 can be spread across decades with long gaps in between.
