SSDI eligibility: work credits and the medical test

Disability benefits are not need-based. They require a recent work record and a condition that meets SSA's definition of disability. Both tests must be passed.

You generally need 40 work credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years before disability began, plus a medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. In 2027 one credit costs $1,970 in earnings and you can earn up to four per year.

The two tests

Recent work. Credits are earned by paying Social Security tax on wages or self-employment income. Four credits is a full year. The recency rule is what disqualifies many applicants who worked for decades but stopped several years before becoming disabled.

Medical definition. SSA defines disability more strictly than other programs: the condition must prevent substantial work for at least 12 months or be expected to result in death. Partial or short-term disability does not qualify.

What the SGA limit does

Substantial gainful activity is a monthly earnings threshold. Earnings above it generally mean you are not considered disabled for benefit purposes, regardless of your condition. The 2027 figures are $1,770 for non-blind recipients and $2,950 for blind recipients.

The limit applies to gross earnings from work, not to investment income or a spouse’s income.

What happens after approval

Benefits begin after a five-month waiting period, and Medicare eligibility typically starts 24 months after entitlement. The annual COLA applies automatically: the 2027 increase is 3.6%, the same as for retirement benefits.

Where people go wrong

  • Assuming a doctor’s note is enough. SSA evaluates functional capacity against a defined grid.
  • Applying after several years out of the workforce, when the recency requirement is no longer met.
  • Continuing to earn above the SGA limit while claiming inability to work.

If the work credits are not there, SSI is the separate needs-based program to check instead.

Questions

How many work credits do I need for SSDI?

Most people need 40 credits, and 20 of them must come from the last 10 years ending with the year the disability began. Younger workers need fewer credits.

How much can I earn while receiving SSDI?

In 2027 the substantial gainful activity limit is $1,770 a month for non-blind recipients and $2,950 for blind recipients.

Does SSDI pay the same COLA as retirement?

Yes. The 3.6% COLA for 2027 applies to disability benefits on the same schedule as retirement benefits.

Is SSDI the same as SSI?

No. SSDI is based on work history and is not means-tested. SSI is needs-based, has resource limits of $2,000 for an individual, and is paid on the first of the month.
